"The Graduate"...actually almost all with Dustin Hoffman.
"Leon"
"The Best Offer"
I start seeing tendencies with "citizens" and "dead" and numbers so I'll try to stop myself before it's too late; but really, only one? there should be categories too. "world shifting". "guilty pleasure" "dark comedy" etcetera.
I owe Mel Brooks a great deal for showing me how to create subversive and effective comic satire. "Blazing Saddles" is a film that literally changed my life.
It’s funny. In the movie, Agent Smith tells Morpheus that 1999 was the peak of Human Civilization. But I actually think THE MATRIX was the peak of technological advances in filmmaking.
Yeah sure we have virtual production now, VFX are cheaper, AI will change some things (for better or worse depending on who you ask), but from a filmgoers experience, the last HUGE leap in technology and craftsmanship as it affects the film viewing experience was THE MATRIX.
People were losing their minds watching this — jumping out of their seats in the theater. Watching it dozens of times of dvd. Devouring the then novel special features.
"Children of Paradise" took over 2 years to make during the German occupation of France. Every single frame of film had to be viewed and approved by the German censors. It told a tragic love story while showing every aspect of drama, from mime to the stage and of course the story told on film. What it told about human nature and the evils that those with money and power can do to ravage the poor man on the street is clear and present, throughout the film.
