Every day I ask a movie related question on Substack Notes.
Recently, I asked “Do you prefer animated films or live-action films?”
Here are 3 of the top liked answers:
“Love them both! It depends on the story and what’s trying to be conveyed. The only time I don’t like one or the other is when it felt like the story would work better in the alternate format. Live action animes, for example, just DO NOT work for me. Similarly, I think the “Avatar” movies (blue space people, not the Airbender) should have just been animated. What’s your preference?”
“No preference, I love ‘em both. I think they each have their strengths and I love it when they’re used deliberately.
I always knew Akira was a masterpiece but I watched a wonderful breakdown of the movie from an animator on YouTube and, man, they truly can’t make ‘em like that anymore. (Sadly, the video’s since been taken down or else I’d share it.)”
“Animated. It's way easier for me to get lost in. Probably comes from a combination of my parents collecting cels and treating it like any other art investment, being an early-ish manga/anime adopter, and being a 2D visual artist who learned rudimentary hand drawn animation from Don Bluth. Knowing how friggen hard it is to actually animate 30 seconds adds an extra level of respect for the craft”

Live action, fo’ sho’!
Speaking of animation, has anyone else noticed how fucking ugly TV cartoons are these days? “Bob’s Burgers”, “Rick And Morty”, “American Dad”, my God.
All films ?😂
